ESCOLA SUPERIOR DE TECNOLOGIA DE SETUBAL
Description of the organisation
Escola Superior de Tecnologia (ESTSetúbal) of Instituto Politecnico de Setúbal (IPS) offers 9 Bachelor or/and Engineering Graduation of Science courses, organised into 6 semesters over three years (Bachelor) or 10 semesters over five years (Engineering Graduation). With a capacity of 2400 students it is an important School of Technology in Portugal. ESTSetúbal is a part of Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, which is comprised of three Schools (School of Technology (ESTSetúbal), school of education (ESE), School of Business and Management Sciences (ESCE), School of Health Sciences (ESS)).
ESTSetúbal was started in 1989, and is still growing. The School’s objectives include applied research and experimental development, the provision of services, and co-operation in national and international projects and cultural initiatives. ESTSetúbal possesses high-quality installations for both teaching and the accompaniment of technological R & D, including 20 well-furnished laboratories.
The Engineering Courses offered include the following areas of specialisation: Electricity Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computing Engineering, Automation Control and Instrumentation Engineering, Electromechanics Engineering, Mechanical Energy Engineering, Mechanical Production Engineering, Mechanical Automobile Engineering, Environmental Engineering.
The training provided enables graduates to immediately join teams working in the new technological areas, undertake and/or supervise production and maintenance tasks, work in the technical sectors of commercial and training departments and deal with order specifications, tenders and costing and project planning.
The School is also involved in national and international projects within its technical and scientific ambit.
The ESTSetúbal has a strong relationship with the municipalities of the Setúbal region, giving scientifically and technological support.
Nearby and closely associated with the School of Technology is CITAI (Centro de Inovação Tecnológica em Automação Industrial) which provides consultative and technical support services to the region's industrial community in the area of Industrial Automation.
With the intent of increasing its participation in European Community projects ESTSetúbal is involved in different proposals for R & D projects under the 6th European Framework Program. There is one approved project, started in June 2001 under the 6th European Framework Program about ground coupled heat pumps of high technology and participated in a European Community project under the 5th European Framework Program, from December 2000 to November 2003 about co-combustion of biomass with natural gas. ESTSetúbal has also participated in other European Community projects under previous framework programs. The staffs of ESTSetúbal has its individual experience R & D projects under European Community programs which have been developed also in other institutions as different universities, under external services contracts and Master and PhD. Thesis, or post-doctoral programs. The main role of ESTSetúbal, until now, in R & D projects has been the participation on applied research and experimental development, in national and international projects, which have been done directly with the industries or with others research institutions.
Therefore the ESTSetúbal staffs has a good experience in R&D projects, including EC program projects, in spite of the ESTSetúbal. to be a recent school institution.
List of most relevant projects
“Promotion of Heat Transfer Enhancement Techniques in Industrial Equipment - PHETRA Project”, DGXIII-Program, RSE 072, from 1998-07-01 to 2000-11-30. Objectives: Connecting industrial companies involved in heat equipment on the hand and technical resources centres dealing with innovation and technology transfer on the other hand. ESTSetúbal participated as an invited partner.
“Vado Ligure Reburning Demonstration Project" 4th Framework Programme, THERMIE programme, projecto number SF119-95, from 1995-09-01-2000-08-31. Objectives: To study, develop, implement and demonstrate the technology of reburning coal-over-coal in a commercial power plant to reduce the NOx emissions. ESTSetubal participated under a subcontract.
“Biomass And Gas Integrated CHP Technology-Bagit”, Project Number .ENK5-CT-2000-00111, 5th Framework Programme, from 2000-01-01 to 2003-11-30. Objectives: To study and to develop co-utilisation of biomass and natural gas for the limitation of CO 2 and NO x from heat and power generation systems and to achieve this with the prospect of developing a commercial technology. ESTSetúbal participated as a partner.
“Ground Coupled Heat Pumps Of High Technology –Groundhit”, project number TREN/04/FP6EN/S07.31402/503063, 6th Framework Programme, 2004-06-01 to 2008-05-30. Objectives: The project GROUNDHIT aims at improving cost-effectiveness, competitiveness and market penetration of ground coupled heat pumps, by research, demonstrate and disseminate ground coupled heat pumps of high technology for heating and cooling. ESTSetúbal participates as partner.
“Development of a Model for NOx Reduction under Reburning Conditions using Natural Gas and BioGas as Secondary Fuel - SapiensReb”, project number POCTI/EME/37529/2001, POCTI Programme, Portuguese programme, supported by FCT and FEDER, 2002-04-01 to 2005-12-31. Objectives: The project aims to develop a reduced model to predict the reduction of NOx under reburning conditions, for different kinds of fuels. The reburning is an important technology to reduce the NO x in combustion processes. Biomass is an important renewable source of energy, and its used in combustion processes should be improved. ESTSetúbal participates as project leader.
“Numerical Modelling of Urban Air Quality Relating with Public Healt”, project number POCTI/MGS/47247/2002, POCTI Programme, Portuguese programme, supported by FCT and FEDER, 2003-09-01 to 2006-08-31. Objectives: The project aims to develop a numerical 3-D model based in computational fluid dynamic to predict the local distribution of concentrations of air pollutant species in urban streets considering street canyon. Some indexes relating the air quality and considering the sustainability aspect (environmental, social and economic aspects) will be defined during this work and the influence in public health is considered by data of the paediatric population observed in a hospital urgency with respiratory problem. ESTSetúbal participates as project leader.
